A Different Kind of Math

Costa Rica Doesn't Work Like Mexico or the Caribbean.

If you've shopped Cancun, Punta Cana, or Jamaica, you've seen the all-inclusive wedding package ladder - free ceremony, simple ceremony, small wedding, group package, easy. Costa Rica is mostly not that. Of the fourteen resorts on this list, only one is a true all-inclusive (Secrets Papagayo). The other thirteen are boutique luxury, eco-luxe, or design-forward properties that price weddings closer to a U.S. wedding - more custom line-item quoting, more conversation with the resort planner.

Why Costa Rica is different

Why does Costa Rica price weddings like a U.S. wedding instead of an all-inclusive package?

The boutique reality

Most Costa Rica wedding resorts are small (under 200 keys), independently operated, and built for a different kind of traveler than the all-inclusive market. They don't run on the brand-package model that Sandals, Secrets, Riu, or Iberostar use in the Caribbean. Pricing reflects that - venue fees, food and beverage minimums, custom design, and custom add-ons.

  • Smaller staff means more custom, less templated.
  • Most properties don't have a "wedding department" - they have a single coordinator.
  • Guest experience is more like a U.S. event venue than a turnkey resort.

What that means for your budget

The ceiling is higher and the floor is higher. There's no "free wedding package" route in boutique Costa Rica. But the experience your guests get - and the photos you get - reflect the difference. This is one of the biggest "this isn't quite Cancun" conversations I have with couples early.

  • Florals, music, lighting, and rentals are separate quotes.
  • Welcome events and rehearsal dinners are usually built individually.
  • Vendors are often coordinated through the property's preferred list.

How can we plan a Costa Rica wedding budget that doesn't surprise us later?

Lock the big numbers first

The Costa Rica wedding budget that goes well is the one we build from the actual quote, not from a marketing brochure. Once we know your resort and date, we work through the line items together so there are no surprises 60 days out.

  • Confirm venue fee + minimum F&B before booking.
  • Get the final guest count locked - it changes everything.
  • Decide which private events matter most (welcome dinner? farewell brunch?).
  • Build the floral, music, and AV quotes early.

Spend where guests feel it

  • Music, lighting, and food are the things guests remember. Spend there first.
  • Costa Rica's natural setting (rainforest, volcano, beach, hot springs) is doing serious design work for free - lean into it.
  • A welcome event with local cocktails and small bites does more than a complicated rehearsal dinner.
  • Skip gift bags. Gift them the experience.

What to Know Before You Commit to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most rewarding destinations on this site. It also asks more of you upfront. Here is what every Costa Rica couple should think through before committing.

Two airports, two completely different trips.

LIR (Liberia) is the Pacific Coast airport - smaller, faster, closer to Guanacaste resorts. SJO (San José) serves Arenal / La Fortuna, Osa, and the interior, but every region requires a meaningful onward transfer. Picking the wrong airport for your region adds hours to your guests' travel day.

Pacific beaches are not calm-Caribbean swimmable.

The Pacific Coast has dramatic surf, real waves, and strong currents at most beaches. Resort pools are excellent. But if your vision is Caribbean-style turquoise calm with kids splashing in the water, Costa Rica's Pacific is not that. Guanacaste is gorgeous - just not gentle.

There is no all-inclusive shortcut here.

Most Costa Rica wedding resorts are boutique luxury, not all-inclusive - the pricing section above explains why. Couples who try to find the cheapest CR option usually end up frustrated. The value here is in the place, not the package.

Group transfers are not optional. They are mandatory.

Rental cars and Ubers cause more problems than they solve in Costa Rica, especially for groups arriving on different flights. Private group transfers are the only setup that works. We coordinate this. Guests do not DIY it.

Some of Costa Rica's most beautiful resorts are built into cliffsides, on rainforest hillsides, or accessed by boat. They're stunning - but a guest with knee issues, a stroller, or a hesitant flyer experiences them completely differently than your fittest friend does. Entry Requirements + Visa Info

What identification do U.S. guests need to enter Costa Rica?

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourism stays of up to 180 days in Costa Rica. A valid U.S. passport is required, with at least one day of validity past your intended departure date (Costa Rica's rule is more lenient than most destinations, but always recommend the 6-month validity buffer for safety). Guests will also complete an online entry form via the Costa Rica Migration site within 72 hours of arrival.

One thing worth flagging: Costa Rica may ask guests to show proof of onward travel (a return flight booking) at check-in or arrival. We send our couples' guests the entry checklist so nobody gets caught at the airline counter.

Do you work with off-site venues in Costa Rica?

Yes - and Costa Rica has some of the most distinctive off-site venue options of any destination on this site. Cliffside venues overlooking the Pacific, private rainforest reserves, hot springs gardens with volcano backdrops, and remote eco-lodges that take over the entire property for your weekend.

Off-site venues give you more flexibility on timing, design, and the overall feel - and the best Costa Rica weddings often pair an off-site ceremony with a resort stay so guests still get the full vacation experience. You get the private venue, they get the resort, everyone wins.

Guest Arrival Experience

How will my guests get to the resort?

Group transfers are mandatory in Costa Rica, not optional. Our packages include a custom meet-and-greet at LIR or SJO, with a private transfer to your resort. Your guests step off the plane, are welcomed by name, and taken straight to the resort.

This matters more in Costa Rica than anywhere else on the site. This is one of the most important conversations we have early - and one of the most overlooked. Costa Rica's terrain variety is part of what makes it beautiful, but it also means resort fit matters more here than at most destinations. Some properties are built into cliffsides with steep stairs and stone paths. Others are on rainforest hillsides with gravel walkways. A few are only reachable by boat. They're stunning in photos and stunning in person - but they don't all work for every guest list.
