Before You Choose the Resort

In Costa Rica, adventure isn't the side trip - it's the wedding.

Most destination weddings happen near something interesting - cenotes, mountains, a jungle excursion an hour from the resort. Costa Rica is the destination where the volcano, the rainforest, the hot springs, or the cloud forest is the venue. Seven distinct ecosystems on a country the size of West Virginia. One of the world's only Blue Zones. An active volcano with luxury resorts at its base. The first conversation is which Costa Rica you actually want. The choices are real, and they each lead to a completely different wedding.

Region Guides

Three Costa Rica Regions. Three Very Different Wedding Weekends.

Costa Rica is not one-size-fits-all. The Pacific Coast, Arenal / La Fortuna, and Osa Peninsula each bring their own personality, climate, transfer reality, and guest experience. Open each guide to see which region actually fits your wedding style.

Dana's Fit Check

Costa Rica Weddings: Beautiful, Wild, and Not for Everyone

Costa Rica is not for everyone. That is the point. The couples who love it are not looking for the easiest destination. They are looking for the one that feels like them.

Do these sound like you? If so, Pura Vida!

  • You want a wedding weekend that feels like an adventure, not just a resort stay.
  • You care about scenery, nature, wildlife, and the kind of experience guests remember.
  • You like the idea of one-wedding-a-day energy and smaller, more intentional properties.
  • You are open to planning around region, terrain, transfers, and weather instead of pretending those details do not matter.
  • You want something that feels different, event a far departure from Cancun, Punta Cana, or Jamaica.

Let's be real - this probably isn't a great match if...

  • You need a massive guest list with simple, flat, low-effort logistics.
  • You and your guests are looking to wild-out and party hard.
  • Your dream wedding photos include white sand beach and crystal blue water.
  • You have a strong adversion to large insects and wild animals.
  • You would rather avoid conversations about transfers, mobility, rain plans, and resort terrain.

Preferred Resorts

Fourteen properties. Three regions. One curated list.

These are the resorts I trust for Costa Rica wedding groups. The list is intentionally tight. Costa Rica is not a place where every property is a wedding venue, and the wrong property in the right country still misses. Each card shows the region, the airport, and the real transfer time. The match for your specific guest list is what we figure out together.

From Dana

Costa Rica is not a destination where you pick a resort from photos. The wrong property for your guest list creates more problems than the right property solves. The map tells you the region. This list shows you the curated set inside it. The match, which one for your people, is what we work through together.

A Different Kind of Math

Costa Rica Doesn't Work Like Mexico or the Caribbean.

If you've shopped Cancun, Punta Cana, or Jamaica, you've seen the all-inclusive wedding package ladder - free ceremony, simple ceremony, small wedding, group package, easy. Costa Rica is mostly not that. Of the fourteen resorts on this list, only one is a true all-inclusive (Secrets Papagayo). The other thirteen are boutique luxury, eco-luxe, or design-forward properties that price weddings closer to a U.S. wedding - more custom line-item quoting, more conversation with the resort planner.

Want real sample numbers? Use the Sample Quote buttons on the resort cards above. I keep the quote details tied to the specific property because Costa Rica pricing changes fast and the resort context matters.

Why Costa Rica is different

Why does Costa Rica price weddings like a U.S. wedding instead of an all-inclusive package?

The boutique reality

Most Costa Rica wedding resorts are small (under 200 keys), independently operated, and built for a different kind of traveler than the all-inclusive market. They don't run on the brand-package model that Sandals, Secrets, Riu, or Iberostar use in the Caribbean. Pricing reflects that - venue fees, food and beverage minimums, custom design, and custom add-ons.

  • Smaller staff means more custom, less templated.
  • Most properties don't have a "wedding department" - they have a single coordinator.
  • Guest experience is more like a U.S. event venue than a turnkey resort.

What that means for your budget

The ceiling is higher and the floor is higher. There's no "free wedding package" route in boutique Costa Rica. But the experience your guests get - and the photos you get - reflect the difference. This is one of the biggest "this isn't quite Cancun" conversations I have with couples early.

  • Plan a venue fee + per-person F&B model.
  • Florals, music, lighting, and rentals are separate quotes.
  • Welcome events and rehearsal dinners are usually built individually.
  • Vendors are often coordinated through the property's preferred list.

Smart Budget Moves

How can we plan a Costa Rica wedding budget that doesn't surprise us later?

Lock the big numbers first

The Costa Rica wedding budget that goes well is the one we build from the actual quote, not from a marketing brochure. Once we know your resort and date, we work through the line items together so there are no surprises 60 days out.

  • Confirm venue fee + minimum F&B before booking.
  • Get the final guest count locked - it changes everything.
  • Decide which private events matter most (welcome dinner? farewell brunch?).
  • Build the floral, music, and AV quotes early.

Spend where guests feel it

  • Music, lighting, and food are the things guests remember. Spend there first.
  • Costa Rica's natural setting (rainforest, volcano, beach, hot springs) is doing serious design work for free - lean into it.
  • A welcome event with local cocktails and small bites does more than a complicated rehearsal dinner.
  • Skip gift bags. Gift them the experience.

Dana's Tip: The "this is more expensive than Cancun" reaction usually fades the moment couples see the property in person. The trade-off is real. So is the result.

Before You Choose

What to Know Before You Commit to Costa Rica

Costa Rica is one of the most rewarding destinations on this site. It also asks more of you upfront. Here is what every Costa Rica couple should think through before committing.

01

Two airports, two completely different trips.

LIR (Liberia) is the Pacific Coast airport - smaller, faster, closer to Guanacaste resorts. SJO (San José) serves Arenal / La Fortuna, Osa, and the interior, but every region requires a meaningful onward transfer. Picking the wrong airport for your region adds hours to your guests' travel day.

02

Pacific beaches are not calm-Caribbean swimmable.

The Pacific Coast has dramatic surf, real waves, and strong currents at most beaches. Resort pools are excellent. But if your vision is Caribbean-style turquoise calm with kids splashing in the water, Costa Rica's Pacific is not that. Guanacaste is gorgeous - just not gentle.

03

There is no all-inclusive shortcut here.

Most Costa Rica wedding resorts are boutique luxury, not all-inclusive - the pricing section above explains why. Couples who try to find the cheapest CR option usually end up frustrated. The value here is in the place, not the package.

04

Group transfers are not optional. They are mandatory.

Rental cars and Ubers cause more problems than they solve in Costa Rica, especially for groups arriving on different flights. Private group transfers are the only setup that works. We coordinate this. Guests do not DIY it.

05

Terrain matters more here than most destinations.

Some of Costa Rica's most beautiful resorts are built into cliffsides, on rainforest hillsides, or accessed by boat. They're stunning - but a guest with knee issues, a stroller, or a hesitant flyer experiences them completely differently than your fittest friend does. Before you fall in love with a property, we look at your full guest list. The resort has to fit the people, not just the photos.

06

Costa Rica is one of the most LGBTQ+-affirming destinations on this site.

Same-sex marriage has been legal in Costa Rica since 2020, and the culture is broadly progressive and welcoming. After Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica is the most affirming destination on this site for LGBTQ+ couples and guests. Resort staff are well-trained, and the country is genuinely comfortable for celebration.

From Dana

Costa Rica is the destination where the planning conversations matter most. They also pay off most. The couples who lean into the trade-offs end up with weddings that feel unlike anything else. The couples who fight them end up frustrated.

Planning Timeline

When to Start Planning a Costa Rica Wedding

Costa Rica boutique resorts hold smaller inventory than mass-market destinations. The best dates, room blocks, and venues book up earlier. This destination especially rewards an early start.

12-18 Months Out

Choose the Resort + Date

This is the window to compare resort styles, lock your date, and get your room block contracted before the best inventory disappears.

9-12 Months Out

Open Guest Booking

Your guests get their booking link and start reserving rooms. The more time they have to pay in installments, the less stress for everyone.

6-9 Months Out

Refine the Weekend

Ceremony details, welcome events, rooming updates, and excursions start coming together. This is where the weekend takes real shape.

3-6 Months Out

Lock Everything Down

Final payments, transfer coordination, arrival notes, and travel-week guidance - everything your guests need before they pack their bags.

From Dana

Planning a Costa Rica wedding does not move at the same pace as planning one at home. Coordinators here are juggling fewer weddings and answer thoughtfully. The trade-off is that exchanges take a few days, not a few hours. The earlier you are contracted and your guests have their booking link, the more breathing room everyone has.

Local Flavor

Six ways to bring Costa Rica into the weekend.

Seven ecosystems. One of the world's five Blue Zones. A culture built around pura vida. The best Costa Rica weekends lean into all of it. These are the experiences that turn a wedding trip into the vacation guests talk about for years.

Fire + Water

Volcano + Hot Springs

Arenal / La Fortuna is one of the only active volcano regions in the world with a luxury wedding scene built around it - hot springs that bubble naturally from the earth, thermal pools at every resort, and a sunset volcano view that genuinely cannot be replicated. A welcome night at Tabacón's hot springs or a sunset cocktail with the volcano in the background is the kind of detail guests do not forget.

Mist + Canopy

Cloud Forest

Monteverde is one of the most distinctive ecosystems on Earth - a rainforest at altitude, perpetually wreathed in mist, with hanging bridges that put your guests at canopy level among the toucans and quetzals. Half-day excursions are easy to coordinate from Arenal / La Fortuna, and the visual experience is something most guests have only seen in National Geographic.

Soil + Craft

Coffee Plantation Tours

Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee on Earth, and the highland plantations - Doka Estate, Hacienda Alsacia, the smaller family farms - are genuinely beautiful places to visit. A morning coffee tour for the wedding party, or a welcome bag stocked with single-origin beans, is the kind of detail that signals real Costa Rica without being a cliché.

Wildlife + Wonder

Sloths, Macaws, Sea Turtles

Costa Rica's wildlife is part of the daily experience, not a separate excursion. Sloths in the canopy at Andaz, scarlet macaws over the Osa, monkey troops at most resort properties, and sea turtle nesting tours on the Pacific coast in season. The country runs on 99% renewable energy and leads the world on conservation - your guests are not just seeing wildlife, they are seeing what conservation actually looks like.

Pura Vida + Longevity

Wellness + the Blue Zone

The Nicoya Peninsula is one of only five Blue Zones in the world - places where people regularly live to 100 with vitality, joy, and connection. That is not marketing. It is research. Costa Rica's wellness culture is built on this: jungle yoga, cacao ceremonies, sound healing, sunrise beach meditation, world-class spas at every level. A wellness day for the wedding party, or just the two of you the morning after, is one of the most memorable things on the weekend.

Adventure + Adrenaline

Ziplining + Rainforest Excursions

Costa Rica is the country that invented modern canopy ziplining - and the experiences here genuinely stand alone. A group zipline morning between rehearsal dinner and the wedding, a white-water rafting half-day, an ATV tour through coffee country - this is the country where adventure shows up easily, with established operators that handle wedding-group logistics smoothly.

Add-On

White Glove On-Site Support

On-site coordination during your wedding weekend - guest arrivals, real-time troubleshooting, and direct resort communication so you can stay fully present.

Start Planning

Your Costa Rica wedding starts with the right region.

You do not need to know the resort yet. You probably do not even know the region. That is what the consultation is for. We talk through your guest list, your vision, your non-negotiables, and what kind of weekend you actually want your guests to experience. Then we build the right Costa Rica trip from there.

  • We narrow down which region actually fits your group. Pacific Coast, Arenal / La Fortuna, or Osa.
  • We match the right resort to your full guest list. Terrain, mobility, ages, all of it.
  • You get real guidance on guest counts, transfers, and weather windows before any guest books.

For couples who want their wedding weekend to feel like the trip, not just the venue.

FAQ

A few extra things couples usually ask before they book.

The questions couples almost always ask - but sometimes forget to until guests start asking them first. Open any section below for the full answer.

Entry Requirements + Visa Info

What identification do U.S. guests need to enter Costa Rica?

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourism stays of up to 180 days in Costa Rica. A valid U.S. passport is required, with at least one day of validity past your intended departure date (Costa Rica's rule is more lenient than most destinations, but always recommend the 6-month validity buffer for safety). Guests will also complete an online entry form via the Costa Rica Migration site within 72 hours of arrival.

One thing worth flagging: Costa Rica may ask guests to show proof of onward travel (a return flight booking) at check-in or arrival. We send our couples' guests the entry checklist so nobody gets caught at the airline counter.

Inclusivity

LGBTQ+ wedding considerations in Costa Rica

Quick rating

LGBTQ+ Destination Wedding Fit: 4.5 / 5

Costa Rica is one of the most LGBTQ+-affirming destinations on this site. Same-sex marriage has been legal nationwide since 2020, and the broader culture is genuinely progressive - especially in the wedding-resort regions where staff are well-trained and visiting LGBTQ+ couples are entirely the norm.

Honest take

After Puerto Vallarta, Costa Rica is the most affirming destination on this site. Resort staff have decades of experience hosting LGBTQ+ weddings, the legal framework is settled, and the country is comfortable, welcoming, and genuinely fun for LGBTQ+ couples and their guests. If you are an LGBTQ+ couple looking for a destination that combines real legal recognition with adventure-meets-luxury character, Costa Rica should be high on your list.

Ceremony Planning

Legal vs. Symbolic Ceremony

Symbolic ceremony

The simplest and most popular route. You legally marry at home, then have the full ceremony and celebration in Costa Rica without adding international legal paperwork to the wedding week. More flexibility on timing, wording, and who officiates - and most of my Costa Rica couples go this route.

Legal ceremony

Legal ceremonies are possible in Costa Rica and the process is relatively straightforward compared to other destinations. Required: certified birth certificates, valid passports, original divorce decrees if previously married, and certified Spanish translations of all English documents. Most resorts have an in-house wedding coordinator or notary who handles the filing - we walk you through current requirements before you commit to this route.

Off-Site Venues

Do you work with off-site venues in Costa Rica?

Yes - and Costa Rica has some of the most distinctive off-site venue options of any destination on this site. Cliffside venues overlooking the Pacific, private rainforest reserves, hot springs gardens with volcano backdrops, and remote eco-lodges that take over the entire property for your weekend.

Off-site venues give you more flexibility on timing, design, and the overall feel - and the best Costa Rica weddings often pair an off-site ceremony with a resort stay so guests still get the full vacation experience. You get the private venue, they get the resort, everyone wins.

Guest Arrival Experience

How will my guests get to the resort?

Group transfers are mandatory in Costa Rica, not optional. Our packages include a custom meet-and-greet at LIR or SJO, with a private transfer to your resort. Your guests step off the plane, are welcomed by name, and taken straight to the resort.

This matters more in Costa Rica than anywhere else on the site. Rental cars and Ubers cause real problems here - especially for guests arriving on different flights and traveling to remote regions like Arenal / La Fortuna or Osa. Coordinated private transfers are how Costa Rica weddings actually work logistically. We plan this in detail; guests do not DIY it.

Group Experiences

Can we plan a private group excursion?

Yes - and Costa Rica is one of the best destinations for this. Private ziplining mornings, a hot springs takeover at Tabacón, a sunset catamaran on the Pacific, a coffee tour in the highlands, a wildlife sanctuary visit with sloths and macaws, or a chocolate-making workshop. We work with trusted local operators to coordinate these - and they consistently become the part of the trip guests talk about most when they get home.

Guests with Mobility Considerations

What if some of my guests have mobility issues or trouble with uneven terrain?

This is one of the most important conversations we have early - and one of the most overlooked. Costa Rica's terrain variety is part of what makes it beautiful, but it also means resort fit matters more here than at most destinations. Some properties are built into cliffsides with steep stairs and stone paths. Others are on rainforest hillsides with gravel walkways. A few are only reachable by boat. They're stunning in photos and stunning in person - but they don't all work for every guest list.

If you have older parents, a guest with mobility considerations, friends with knee or hip issues, or anyone who would struggle with uneven terrain, this is exactly where I help. We look at your full guest list and rule out the wrong resorts before you fall in love with one. The resorts on this list span a wide range of accessibility. Some are flat and walkable. Others are not. I will tell you which is which.

Planning Support

Do I need a destination wedding travel agent for Costa Rica?

Why couples use one

  • Costa Rica has more moving parts than most destinations - regions, airports, transfers, weather, guest counts, hotel caps.
  • The wrong region for your guest list creates problems that are hard to fix after booking.
  • Group transfers, private excursions, and matching resort terrain to your guest list all benefit from local relationships.
  • Costa Rica boutique hotels do not always have generous group blocks - early planning matters.

When it helps most

For Costa Rica specifically, working with a destination specialist is not optional - it is the whole point. The country rewards local knowledge, established hotel relationships, and the kind of judgment that comes from having seen the regions in person. The map on this page is a starting point; the rest is what we do together.
