Do You Really Need Travel Protection for a Destination Wedding?

Destination Wedding Travel

Dana Braun is an internationally-recognized, award-winning travel and destination wedding specialist. She visits dozens of resorts each year and is regarded as an expert in creating, planning, and executing one-of-a-kind travel itineraries in Mexico & the Caribbean.

TL;DR: Travel protection is strongly recommended for destination weddings because reservations are often non-refundable after deadlines for both couples and guests. It provides a financial safety net if injuries, illness, or unexpected disruptions occur while traveling internationally.

Travel protection. This is usually the point where both couples and guests say some version of the same thing.

“Nothing ever happens to us.”
Or… “I’m not going to cancel.”

I get it. No one accepts an invitation to a destination wedding thinking something will go wrong. You’re picturing flights booked, bags packed, a beautiful location, and an unforgettable week celebrating people you love.

I wish I could tell you nothing ever goes wrong.

But after more than a decade of planning international travel and destination weddings, I’ve learned that travel protection isn’t about expecting problems. It’s about understanding that when you’re traveling internationally – especially for something as meaningful as a wedding – you’re far away from home, routines, and safety nets.

Most trips go exactly as planned. But when something does happen, it tends to affect more than just one person… and the costs add up quickly.

That’s why I talk about this early, with everyone traveling, not just the couple.

When “nothing ever happens to us”… does

No one plans for things to go sideways. But after doing this for more than a decade, I can tell you something honestly… things don’t have to be dramatic to be expensive.

In 2024 alone, I had two separate wedding weeks impacted by broken bones.
One bride broke her foot stepping into her own pool the day after her wedding – thank god not the day before.
Another groom broke his ankle trying to save his wedding ring after it slipped into the ocean. Sweet story. Very expensive ending.

Then there was Costa Rica. Severe storms rolled through. Flooding. Mudslides. Wedding guests stranded for days with no way out. Extra hotel nights. Rebooked flights. Transportation costs stacking up fast.

None of these people expected the annoyances or extra costs. None of them thought they would need protection. And yet, without it, the financial hit would have been brutal.

This is why I take travel protection seriously… for both the couple and their guests. Destination weddings involve sun, alcohol, uneven terrain, new foods, long travel days, and a packed schedule. It doesn’t take a disaster for something to go wrong.

And when you’re in another country, things work differently. Most medical facilities require payment upfront, in full, before care is provided. We’re talking thousands of dollars. Travel protection covers that. And that peace of mind matters.

What most people don’t realize travel protection actually covers

Most people assume travel protection is about flights or lost luggage. For destination weddings, that’s not the part that matters most.

What surprises guests is how different wedding reservations are from a regular vacation. Once you’re inside a room block and past certain deadlines, changes or cancellations are usually non-refundable. That applies to everyone, not just the couple.

If someone gets sick, injured, or has a family emergency after that point, the resort isn’t issuing refunds. Travel protection is what steps in when real life happens at the wrong time.

I also see this as protection for the couple. When guests are covered, couples aren’t left feeling responsible or stressed if someone can’t make the trip late in the game. There’s a safety net in place for everyone.

Why we always recommend it (and never force it)

Travel protection is always optional. The decision is entirely yours. My job isn’t to push, it’s to make sure you understand your options before you decide.

I always say the same thing: we hope you never have to use it, but we always hope you have it.

Destination weddings involve real financial commitments, for couples and for guests. Once payments are made and deadlines pass, there’s very little flexibility if plans change. Travel protection is simply the safety net that sits underneath all of that.

Some people travel their entire lives and never need it. Others are grateful they had it once, and would never skip it again. There’s no right or wrong choice, just an informed one.

Our role is to guide you, explain what’s available, and answer questions honestly. After that, it’s your call. If you have any questions, we are here for you.
